UN Special Representative says new developments signal success for Somalia.
Nairobi, 27 March 2008 - The United Nations Special Representative
for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, has said the decision by members of
Somalia's opposition to respond to his invitation is a welcome, positive
first step.
Earlier this month Somalia's President, Speaker and Prime Minister
announced the TFG's readiness to talk to the opposition and said they would
nominate a team to lead the discussions. A number of interested parties, in
particular the opposition group known as Alliance for the Re-Liberation of
Somalia, has now responded to the move.
"I would like to thank all the parties for moving quickly towards
realizing the long awaited hopes and expectations of Somalis who are
yearning for peace and the return of pride in and respect for their country
in international arenas," said the SRSG.
"After further contacts, I will soon continue the process with a meeting
between the various parties at a place and time to be determined. This
meeting will be attended by designated participants."
