Voting got underway for new Somali president, signaling the start of thea  long waited election involving 400 MPs from ARS and the TFG in the neighboring Djibouti.

 



Television channels showed MPs dropping their vote ballots into transparent bottles, where the first stage of the two-phased parliamentary poll was being rolled out.

 



But Mareeg correspondent in Mogadishu, where an Islamic insurgency has been raging since 2006, said as the voting underway there is a silence of the Islamists on the election of the president.

 

More than 10 candidates are competing for the position and one of them will be elected by the 400 lawmakers in the newly enlarged Parliament of the country. These candidates have put forward proposals to solve the country’s problems.



Among the most prominent candidates are Sheik Shariif Sheik Ahmed and Nur Hasan Hussein (Nur Ade). Other candidates include Maslah Mohamed Siyaad Bare, Ali Khalif Galeyr, Yusuf Omar Azhari, Hasan Abshir Farah and Mohamed Mohamud Guled Ga’ma Dhere. Mohamed Qanyare Afrah announced last night that he has withdrawn his candidacy.



Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed’ the leader of ARS opposition group is the forerunner of the election as he is facing contest with Prime minister Nor Hassan Hussein.
