Somalia: Workers demonstrate in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Mareeg)—Hundreds of workers in Mogadishu seaport have demonstrated against closure of the port activities in recent days, witnesses said on Tuesday.

A dispute between the Somali government and the business community has stopped trade at the main port in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The workers said they were dependent on the work they were doing in the port before its activities stopped. The demonstrators gathered at the main gate of Mogadishu port to show their anger against halting the operations of the port.

The dispute between the administration of the port and the businessmen came after the administration drew new rules that require all incoming items to go through security checks, but the businessmen are arguing that their goods will be destroyed by Islamist militants or ruined by the weather since it is the rainy season in Somalia.

The workers called for the Somali government to solve the dispute between the businessman and the port administration to get their work.

Mogadishu seas port, which reopened in 2006 after 15 years of dereliction, is now guarded by African Union peacekeepers.
