MOGADISHU (Mareeg)—Witnesses in Somalia's capital say at least five civilians have been killed in new clashes between government troops and Islamist insurgents.
The fighting broke out late Saturday in Mogadishu's Bondhere and Abdiaziz districts after Islamist rebels attacked bases of government soldiers in the area.
At least ten civilians were also wounded as the warring sides exchanged heavy mortar fire during the clashes.
Insurgents led by the Islamist militant group al-Shabab are trying to overthrow the Somali government led by President Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed.
The insurgents control much of southern Somalia, although the Islamist groups started to fight between them in some southern towns.
