MOGADISHU (Mareeg)—Fierce fighting between al Shabaab and Hizbul Islam militants erupted in Biibi town about 60 kilometers north of Kismayo, the regional capital of Lower Jubba region in southern Somalia, officials and witnesses said on Saturday.

The fighting started after al Shabaab militants launched attack on a base of Hizbul Islam militia in the area. Residents said the fighting stared 5:00 local time in the afternoon and continued more that two hours.

The warring sides used heavy machine guns in the fighting which could be heard around the area where the two sides battled in.

The exact casualties of the fighting are not known, but unconfirmed reports say three al Shabaab officials were killed in the fighting.

Sheikh Hassan Yakub, a spokesman for al Shabaab administrators in the port town of Kismayo claimed victory over the fighting.

Sheikh Yakub accused Ogaden Liberation Front ONLF of aiding Hizbul Islam to the fighting against the Shabaab.

He added that they took control of the contested area. So far, there is no word from the other side that fought against the Shabaab militants.
