MOGADISHU (Mareeg) – At least five civilians have killed and ten others have been wounded in clashes between Islamist rebels and government soldiers in Mogadishu, witnesses said onTuesday.
Residents said the fighting started in parts of Shibis and Abdiaziz districts in Mogadishu and also mortars were used in the fighting.
Mohamed Osman Arus, a spokesman for Hizbul Islam rebel group said their bases have attacked by government soldiers and defended them.
But on the other hand, a spokesman for the Somali government Aden Mohamed said Islamist rebels attacked bases of the Somali government soldiers in north Mogadishu.
The sound of heavy gunfire and shelling could be heard in the capital during the fighting and the warring sides have reportedly used heavy machine guns in the fighting.
The fighting comes as Islamist rebels launched attack on a base of Burundian troops in Mogadishu on Monday.
Mortar shells landed in civilian populated areas in Mogadishu where some civilians were killed and others were wounded.
Hundreds of civilians lost their lives in the endless fighting in Mogadishu and thousands of families fled from the capital.
The wars in Mogadishu became daily and people have expressed deep concern about the repeated wars. Mareeg Online
