somalia:Somali Situation Report-Part one

Published: November 2, 2008 (Mareeg)--Few years ago Islamic Courts Union made Mogadishu a thriving city emerging from ravages of war. Foreigners exploring business opportunities were finding hotels full and some were literally camping hotel lobbies. Now the United Nations called Mogadishu the worst humanitarian crisis in this century since the Rwandan genocide. To understand the tragedy one must clear through a fog of confusion caused by the current environment which mired by lack of information and disinformation. With the current lack of free media inside Somalia anyone with an axe to grind plants stories, rumors, insinuations and outright lies with no verifiable sources behind them.

The Somali capital, Mogadishu was a city of over a million residents. Over fifteen years the city had no government, police force, fire-fighters, legal courts and all organs of government cease to exist. The city was divided by and run by ruthless warlords with rifles and anti-aircraft missiles who frequently use against civilians. They killed, looted, pillaged, raped, murdered, and kidnapped.

Over sixteen conferences were held to bring about a government which all ended in failure. The international organizations including the Organization of African Union (OAU), The United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), the United States (US) and Arabs agree that it is impossible to bring about peace as long as warlords are running the affairs of the Somali people.

The current Transitional Federal Government or some call them a Union of Somali Warlords (USM) has been in existence for many years prior to Ethiopians with the financial and tactical assistance of Americans escorting them into Mogadishu.

The original intention of the Kenyan conference that made this TFG possible was to bring about all influential people of Somalia including intellectuals and religious leaders, peace activists, social workers and non governmental agencies to form a national Unity Government.

However, the idea did not sit well with the warlords and they expelled from the conference the intellectuals, peace activists, religious clerics and any responsible individual they thought was not tainted by crimes they have committed. They created a quota based on tribal affiliations and each warlord self appointed to fill the position. They called themselves parliamentarians. A parliament made off ruthless warlords with no mandate from the Somalis. This sham government was formed in absentia.

The TFG a warlord alliance selected their most ruthless among them as the president to avoid future war crime tribunals for the titanic war crimes they committed against innocent civilians. The Ethiopians making sure their interest is well served appointed the Prime Minister (Mr. Gedi) an obscure figure with no experience in government or history at all. He was given the job because his father was once the driver of the current Ethiopian Prime Minister and was trusted by the Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.   By Ali Osman – New York-
