Somalia: Tension reported as Kenyan planes overfly southwestern district

Elwaq District in Gedo Region is very tense following the deployment of Kenyan soldiers on the Kenyan side of the border and the sight of Kenyan planes flying over the skies of Elwaq in Somalia.

The tension follows the deployment of many Kenyan soldiers early this morning on the Kenyan side of the border.

There are fears the troops may attack the Somali side of the border.

Reports from Elwaq Somalia say a mass exodus of people has began there.

This has been prompted by low flying Kenyan planes over Elwaq, according to a local resident who briefed Shabelle radio.

Islamists forces in control of the town are said to have started massive preparations to defend themselves from attack from the Kenyan side.

The move follows the abduction of two women and three vehicles from the Kenyan side of the border the day before yesterday evening. The abductees were moved to the Somali side of the border by their kidnappers.

The Islamists administration in the district has vowed that they would fight against the Kenyan troops if they try to cross the threshold the town.
