Al-Shabab has once again said foreign ships coming into Somali waters to allegedly fight Somali pirates have a hidden agenda on the Somali coast.

The Al-Shabab spokesman, Sheikh Muqtar Ali alias Abu Mansur, addressing the residents of Marka, Lower Shabelle [southern Somalia] in a public area yesterday spoke on various religious matters and touched on the political situation in Somalia.

The Al-Shabab spokesman spoke on the issue of Somali pirates and said they had managed to eradicate the Somali pirates during their rule, but ever since there was foreign interference, they have regained control.

He added that countries that are deploying warships and their navy along the Somali coast have a different agenda, which is not to fight the pifrates. He said the foreign navies had in the past captured pirates and released them.

Their intention, he added, was to fish on the Somali coast, which is blessed with different kinds of natural resources.

The spokesman said the interest of foreigners on the Somali coast was purely economical.

The public address by the Al-Shabab official to residents of Marka is the first since they took over various towns in Lower Shabelle Region.
