Somalia: Al Shabaab militants flog football players in southern town

MOGADISHU (Mareeg)—Al-Shabaab militants have flogged young teenagers in Jowhar town, 90 km north of the Somali capital Mogadishu, witnesses said on Monday.

The Shabaab accused the teenagers of wasting their time in playing football. An ad hoc court of al Shabaab sentenced the teenagers to be whipped 38 lashes each person.

Witnesses said al Shabaab militias summoned the people using loudspeakers to an open area in the town to watch the teenagers being whipped by the rebels.

The group executed two young men in public on Sunday after telling a crowd in the port town of Merca that they had confessed to spying for the Somali government.

Witnesses said the age of the teenagers was between 10 up to 15 years old. They ordered the teenagers not to play football as they described as Un-Islamic and waste of time.
